Brunch review: Bills

Bills is a well-known restaurant located around the UK,  in the last few years more and more Bills seem to be popping up which we absolutely love and it means wherever you visit you are usually close to one.  We love visiting Bills we have never been served a bad meal and the staff are always incredibly friendly.

We visit regularly for lunch and dinner but we had never been for brunch before, We are just as surprised as you are we are not sure how this has happened?

One of our friends recently invited us to her engagement brunch and her restaurant of choice was Bills which we were SO chuffed about. We did of course take a look at the menu beforehand (who doesn’t) and we already wanted to taste EVERYTHING on the menu. Why it is that brunch food is always SO good, it makes it so hard to choose what to have.

The breakfast/brunch menu includes; full English fry ups (meat and veggie of course), coconut porridge, bacon or sausage bap, a selection of buttermilk pancakes and lots of egg dishes.

Rach went for the buttermilk pancakes served with streaky bacon and maple syrup, they were SO delicious. The three pancakes were like a dream they were light and fluffy and cooked until golden brown they were incredibly filling and the portion size was perfect. The Bacon was extra crispy (our favourite) and the generous maple syrup completed the dish perfectly.

Annie opted for the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on wholemeal toast with which again was amazing. It would have been even better if they had served it with a wedge of lemon on the side, but saying that the waitress was more than happy to go and get some. The dish was filling and really delicious but then again you cannot really go wrong with this dish.

Other members of our party went for the full fry up and we have to say when it was served to them we did have a bit of food envy going on. It looked SO delicious and we especially noticed the quality of the sausages they looked so succulent YUM!

Bills is such good value for money the total of our brunch came to £12 each and that was for our food, drink and a tip on top! We couldn’t believe it we thought it was going to be a lot more than that so it was a pleasant surprise.

The atmosphere in Bills is one of the main reasons why we love it so much, it has chilled vibes and the staff are always really friendly.

Walking In The Woods

Do you ever just wake up in the morning and all you fancy doing is going for a long walk through the woods? We LOVE walking we think it does wonders for the mind and we always feel so much better for it.

There is something about getting out of bed on a Sunday morning, putting on some trainers, our scruffy clothes and getting outside to enjoy the fresh air in this beautiful world we live in. Sundays are usually our rest days from the gym so instead we slow down the pace and just go for a casual stroll instead, it’s the only time of the week where we actually slow down, no wonder our minds work at 100mph if our bodies are doing exactly the same.

We have both been lucky enough to grow up with the woods just a stone throw away and trust us we don’t take it for granted, we absolutely love it and we make the most of it wherever possible.  Sunday morning are always so peaceful we rarely see another soul, which always surprises us as we always expect to see lots of people, although saying that  most people are probably enjoying a lazy Sunday in bed  as we are known to wake up unusually early.  You will see us out in the woods come rain, snow or shine, we especially love it in the snow it’s like our own little winter wonderland where we can pretend we are in Narnia it’s truly is beautiful.

We have never understood why people HATE walking? Walking is free and one of the easiest ways to get fit and become more active yet so many people hate it. As a society it has become too easy to get from A to B without using your legs, there are so many different types of transport these days it has resulted in us not having to walk.

We are those people that think it’s possible to WALK anywhere and everywhere, we recently saw a meme on Facebook of this and it made us laugh because that is us down to a T! We always try and beat the Google Maps whenever we walk anywhere it’s become a little game we have, because we are so COOL!

Christmas Day Breakfast 

We actually cannot believe that Christmas has come around so quickly, how are we already thinking about what we are going to eat for breakfast on Christmas morning, its mad. We did however think it would be the perfect opportunity to share with you a little recipe that will help start your Christmas morning, nothing fancy just keeping v simple, v quick and most importantly vv tasty.

Christmas breakfast has always been quite a big deal in our households, we always start our Christmas with a super yummy breakfast and a glass or two of champagne. Christmas Day always revolves around food and every meal has got that extra bit of magic added to it usually in the form of champagne in our houses. We have therefore decided to jazz up our breakfast up this year to make it that little bit more special and went for waffles topped with cream cheese and smoked salmon YASSS! If you wanted to you could even shape the waffles into snowflakes or Christmas trees!

recipe below makes 5 waffle so double or tripple the recipe if you have more mouths to feed.

Ingredients
125g Plain Flour
½ tsp Caster Sugar
½ tsp Baking Powder
¾ tsp Mustard Powder
¼ tsp Smoked Paprika
½ tsp ground pepper
210ml Milk
65g Unsalted butter
2 Medium eggs

Method
Place the flour, sugar, baking powder, mustard powder, paprika, salt and pepper in a large mixing bowl.
Mix until all ingredients are combined
In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, butter and eggs.
Make a well in the dry mix, and pour the wet mix into it gradually, whisking until fully combined
Leave the batter on the side for 5 minutes
Switch the Waffle Maker on and lightly oil, close the lid and allow the waffle machine to heat up
Once the waffle maker is hot enough pour the mixture into the centre of each waffle
Close the lid and leave to cook for 4 minutes, without opening the lid
Open the lid of the machine carefully and remove the waffle
Repeat with the remaining batter and keep the rest of them warm in the oven on a wire rack to ensure they do not become soggy

Raspberry Ripple protein pancakes

Pancakes pancakes pancakes…. You can never eat too many. Therefore we feel obliged to continue to share pancake recipes and toppings with you all. We eat pancakes at least once a week usually on a Saturday or Sunday morning when we have extra time in the kitchen. We haven”t posted a pancake post for a while so here you go, let us know if you decide to make them.

Ingredients
100g oat flour or oats blended
1.5tsp baking powder
1.5tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp cinnamon
1 scoop/sachet of organic protein company protein
3 egg whites
50ml Milk we used almond milk
Fresh punnet of raspberries or frozen raspberries
2 tbsp Chia seeds
2 tbsp of Water
Greek yoghurt we used Fage

Method
Place your raspberries (save a couple for the toppings) in a saucepan and allow them cook on a low heat
Once your raspberries have stewed add tbsp of water (more if necessary)
Take the raspberries off the heat, stir in the chia seeds and set aside to set
Blend your oats until they form a flour
Add the rest of the dry ingredients and blend.
Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until it forms a batter.
Heat your pan (medium/high heat) and melt some coconut oil.
Add a table spoon of mixture to your pan and flip once bubbles appear on the surface.
Mix the greek yoghurt in a bowl with the raspberry chia seed jam
Sandwich the pancakes togther using the raspberry yoghurt filling
Top with the left over yoghurt filling and fresh raspberries

Brunch Review Chiltern Firehouse

We have wanted to visit here for a while, especially after stalking the hash tags on Instagram and seeing the most incredible pancakes and were very lucky to get a reservation here as apparently is very difficult to get a table. Our visit to Chiltern Firehouse did not disappoint and we were still dreaming and talking about the food days after!

A short walk from Baker Street on the beautiful Chiltern Street in an old fire-station is this hidden treasure of London. From the outside you wouldn’t know it was there really, apart from the porter out the front! You enter through the most amazing little gardens which have a huge fire. As it was May and kinda warm we were asked if we wanted a table outside. We declined as we thought it would be too cold, however in hindsight kind of wished we had sat outside because it was so pretty and there were heaters – guess we will have to visit again soon!

 

As we were a little early for our table we were asked to wait at the bar for our table. We were given a drinks menu which had most champagne on it – we strawberry and basil champagne sounded delicious!

We were shortly taken to our table and given menus to look at and asked if we wanted drinks. We both ordered iced coffees made with almond milk. The coffees arrived and boy were they strong, but amazing!

 

We ordered some starters/snacks to share and decided to go with the homemade sour dough and the bacon cornbread. The bacon cornbread came with the most amazing chipotle-maple butter and the sourdough came with butter. The bacon cornbread was warm and dipped in the chipotle-maple butter was a match made in heaven. We could’ve easily had one plate each rather than sharing! The butter was so good that we spread it on the sourdough bread too! Honestly, this butter was amazing and we want to return to have the starters all over again!

 

Now, for the main event….. of course we both ended up ordering the same! Its great that we like the same food and makes life easier but then it gives us less to write about in these posts as we both eat the same! However when there are pancakes on the menu you can guaranteed that we order them! Having said that our friend ordered the Eggs Florentine so we have a picture of those to share with you, and she said they were delicious!

 

These pancakes however were the fluffiest tastiest ever. We were given a stack of 3, topped with blueberries and creme fraiche and served with a jug of maple syrup. Our expectations for these pancakes were certainly met and they really did not disappoint. We also loved the fact that when the waitress came back she asked us if we wanted another jug of maple syrup, that’s never happened before at brunch!

Mocha Protein Pancakes

If you follow our Instagram you will see how much we love coffee, so it seemed the perfect idea to experiment and make mocha protein pancakes. Pancakes are so easy to make and once you have the base recipe you can just add flavour to them. We also made ‘nicecream’ for the first time, and it turned out really well. You basically blend frozen bananas and we decided to add a shot of espresso.

mocha-pancakes

Makes 8 Pancakes
Note- that you have to prepare the nicecream the night before you make the pancakes. 

Ingredients
100g Oats Blended or oat flour or oatmeal flour
1 Scoop Unflavoured Protein
3 egg whites
1.5tsp Bicarbonate of soda
1.5tsp Baking Powder
2tbsp raw cacao
1tbsp coconut sugar
1 espresso
50ml Milk of your choice we used oat milk  (add a bit at a time as you may need more or less)

Toppings
1 bar melted dark chocolate
2tbsp maple syrup

Nicecream
2 bananas frozen
1 espresso shot

Method
1.roughly chop the banana and place in an air tight container before putting them in the freezer for at least 5 hours (we did it the night before)
2. Take the bananas out of the freezer and blend them until they form an ice cream like consistency (it will be quite runny). Add the shot of espresso to the mixture and pour into a container.
3. Place the banana mix back into the freezer for a couple of hours until solid.
4.Place the dry ingredient in a bowl
5. Add the egg whites and mix. Add the espresso and  then slowly add the milk until a batter forms.
6. Heat your pan (medium/high heat) and melt some coconut oil.
7. Add a table spoon of mixture to your pan and flip once bubbles appear on the surface.
8. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over simmering water and then add the maple syrup
9. Stack the pancakes, place a scoop of espresso nicecream ontop and drizzle with the chocolate sauce

Vanilla protein pancakes with raspberry yoghurt and peanut butter

If you haven’t guessed already we basically had a pancake party on the Saturday morning before Pancake Day, except we were the only ones attending the party. It was great for us as it meant we got to eat all the pancakes until we were completely pancaked out (if that is even possible).

These vanilla protein pancakes with Peanut butter and raspberry taste absolutely incredible! They are the perfect breakfast choice and we thoroughly enjoyed them post the 8 mile run we did on Saturday morning.

Our protein of choice was the Whey Ahead vanilla sachet but you could in fact use any of their flavours using the recipe below. They have so many flavours e.g. toffee, cookie dough, banana, strawberry, chocolate orange and that is just naming a few.  We cannot wait to experiment and don’t worry they will be recipes to follow!

Makes 10 Pancakes
Ingredients
100g oat flour or oats blended
1.5tsp baking powder
1.5tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp cinnamon
1 scoop/sachet or vanilla whey powder
3 egg whites
50ml Milk we used oat milk

Toppings
Peanut butter
Fage yoghurt
Chia seed jam or any other kind of jam
Flaked almonds

Method
Blend your oats until they form a flour
Add the rest of the dry ingredients and blend.
Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until it forms a batter.
Heat your pan (medium/high heat) and melt some coconut oil.
Add a table spoon of mixture to your pan and flip once bubbles appear on the surface.
Mix the greek yoghurt in a bowl with the raspberry jam
Sandwich the pancakes together alternating the fillings each time (one raspberry yoghurt and the other peanut butter)
sprinkle falkes almonds over the top

Brunch Review Muriel’s Kitchen

We are on the hunt for the best places to go for brunch in London and Greater London and couldn’t think of a better topic to blog about. As you can probably already tell we are absolute foodies and we would say breakfast is our favourite meal of the day, you can read our blog post about it hereAt the weekend going for brunch is ideal because it means a later breakfast and you can go all out on a big meal to start the day.

We read about Muriel’s Kitchen on The Culture Trip so when we were in the area before a blogging event we just had to take a visit. We tried to book a table online but it was fully booked (we would recommend booking in advance at the weekend), however decided to risk it and turn up. We had to wait around 15 minutes for a table because the whole place was jam packed but it was worth the wait.

Firstly we ordered drinks with Rachel opting to try a juice and Annie going for the bottomless filter coffee (£2 is a bargain!). The juice was delicious and very refreshing and we like the little touch of the cucumber on the side.

 

 

We then ordered the toast to share, this came with butter and a whole jar of jam!! The bread was very tasty and there was certainly enough for us to share whilst we waited for the main event! It was so hard to decide what to order for the main brunch. We had watched all the dishes come out the kitchen whilst waiting for a table and were eying up a couple of dishes. As Rachel doesn’t like eggs it was a bit easier to decide, (most brunch dishes always include some form of egg!), and choosing the pancakes was a clear winner. It was harder for Annie to decide however in the end she also went for the pancakes.

 

When they arrived, our faces and gasps of ‘wow’ even made the waitress chuckle. The presentation wad impressive and the portion size even better! We do not know how the pancakes were made  but they were so fluffy and a bit cake like and had berries in them too. They were then topped with berry coulis, icing sugar and greek yoghurt. We were then given a very generous jug of maple syrup to pour over. I don’t think we need to write any more about because you can just drool over the pictures instead!

 

We are advocates of brunch and love trying out new places to go. This was definitely a great place to start our hunt for the best place for brunch in London and Greater London. Where would you recommend we try next?

February Favourites

Wow, cannot believe we are in March already, time really does fly! The month has gone so quick we cannot even remember what happened! However see out favourites from this month below:

Homemade granola- One evening we randomly decided to make granola and we were surprised at how easy it is, and also how it will save us so much money. It is actually really expensive to buy ready made granola, and to make your own you just need some oats and a choice of coating. Its fun because you can make different flavour granola. Warm honey in pan and stir in the oats, or warm some peanut butter or Biscoff spread – all work equally well and equally delicious.

Matching gym gear- This month we decided to buy matching gym gear, and its the best decision ever. We have had such fun taking photos together and they look pretty cool when we are in matching active wear (well we think so anyway!). There are so many places that sell stylish active wear and we cannot wait to go shopping!

Pancakes-We have well and truly embraced Pancake Day this month and have made an awful lot of pancakes. Some we have already posted to our blog, but we have more to come in the future, because pancakes are for life not just for pancake day! You can definitely eat pancakes all year round, so watch this space.

Mochas- We have been making our own mochas in the evenings when those chocolarte cravings kick in. We have a tsp of decaff coffee and 2tsps of Cadburys Highlight hot chocolate mix it with a bit of milk and the rest hot water. It tastes so delicious and really does satisfy the sweet tooth.

Buffer – We have started using Buffer as we are so busy with work as well as the blog. Buffer is a great tool to schedule posts on social media. So far we have only used it for Twitter where we have been scheduling tweets to promote our blog posts. If you are as busy as us then we would recommend downloading this app and giving it a go!

Holiday booking – It seemed that February was the month to book holidays, we think the cold weather got to us so we just had to book some things to look forward too. We have booked to go to Paris, Palma and Barcelona. If you have any tips or posts for us to read about these destinations then send them our way please, we would love to read them!

Wonder what March will bring, its Annie’s birthday and we have a wedding to go so we are excited already. We also have the #BlogConLDN Event on March 18th, anyone else going?

 

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy Pancakes

Happy Pancake Day! 

Its pancake day, so of course we have to post a recipe for pancakes. We normally make the fat pancakes, or drop scones as they can also be called. However on Pancakes Day we always have the thin pancakes, or crepes as they are known in France. You can make these pancakes super fancy, however we both adore them with lemon and sugar – nice and simple .

Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent begins, which is when Christians traditionally fasted, so they made pancakes to use up all the basic store cupboard ingredients, in particular eggs and fat before the Lenten fast. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days until Easter Day. These days Pancake Day has become a more lavish affair with people making epic pancakes, and huge pancake stacks or even pancake cakes, however we wanted to keep it simple this year. The good thing about these pancakes is that it uses only 4 ingredients and are so quick and easy to make, we should really make and eat them more often! However, the bad thing about these pancakes is that you can make and eat so many, we sure will be enjoying a fair few pancakes this evening!

Ingredients
100g plain flour
150ml milk
2 eggs
butter or oil for the pan

Method
1. Put the flour in a large mixing bowl and make a well.
2. Break the egg into the well and slowly mix together with a whisk
3. Whisk in the milk a little at a time to make a batter
4. Melt the butter in a low frying pan and then add a ladle of batter to the hot pan. Spread the mixture out and cook until the pancake is golden
5. Flip the pancake (if you are brave enough), and then cook the other side
6. Serve with toppings of your choice – we prefer lemon and sugar
