Exploring the Plitvice Lakes National Park

The Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Croatia! It is famous for its turquoise coloured lakes that are just so so stunning! If you are thinking of going to Croatia or you have done a bit of research on Croatia then I am sure you have previously come across Plitvice Lakes!

You can visit Plitvice Lakes as a day trip from almost anywhere, we saw it being advertised in every town we visited. As you can imagine because of this it can get crowded and some parts of it can be very touristy. That being said though we would still recommend visiting because you can easily get away from the crowds!

Find our top tips and lessons learnt below to make sure you have a great time whilst visiting the lakes!

  • Pre book your tickets online! You can book them through trip advisor or through their own website which can be found here.
  • Tickets cost around £40 in high season but you can spend the entire day in the park to make the most of it! It will ask you to select your entry time e.g 9am and they allow you to enter at 9am or anytime before 10am.
  • There are two entrances to the park, so look at your accommodation and decide which entrance is best for you- there is also parking available.
  • There are lots of different routes that you can follow around the park! We picked route ‘K’ which took us the entire way around the lakes. It says to give yourself 6-8 but we did it in around 4.5 hours!
  • If you plan on walking the park in one day then we would recommend only buying a one day ticket! You can comfortably walk the park in a day if you are up for a 13.5 mile walk.
  • You cannot swim in the Plitvice Lakes, so don’t come expecting to be able to! It’s so tempting to just jump in as it is so so clear and beautiful! Instead head to the village of Korana as you can swim there!
  • There are several small villages in Plitvicka Jezera but be aware there isn’t much else to do around the area, so don’t stay for longer than you need to! We stayed in the village of Mukinje which was just a 10 minute walk to entrance 2!
  • If you do have time to spare like I mentioned above you can swim in the river at Korana! Pack your swimsuit and a picnic and spend the day by the river.
  • Food and drink isn’t actually that pricey inside the park which we were super surprised about! We took a pack lunch with us but got a couple of drinks whilst we were there! Most of the food is fast food though so if this isn’t the kind of food you are after turn take a pack lunch!

We hope you have found this post helpful! Make sure you let us know if you decide to visit the Plitvice lakes!
