Visiting the Zrmanja Canyon in Croatia

Before heading to Croatia I did a tonne of research both online and on Instagram (its our go to before any trip) and that is when I came across the Zrmanja Canyon and River.

The Zrmanja Canyon is a peace of heaven and definitely a highlight of our trip, the water is emerald green and shimmers in the sunlight, honestly it is dreamy! The Canyon and River was just a short drive away from where we were staying in Starigrad but you will find day trips to the River/Canyon in almost any town you visit in Croatia!

Swimming in the Zrmanja River

You can swim, canoe and kayak in the Zrmanja River! We actually headed to this part of the river the hike but as soon as we got there we realised that wasn’t going to be possible as there was not a footpath to follow, so we had a back up plan and instead just decided to spend the day chilling by the river.

Head to Berberov Buk to spend the day jumping off the bridge into the fresh water. Simply just type ‘Berberov Buk’ into Google Maps and it will take you to the location.

  • Park on the road or there is a car park that will cost you just £3 a day- we decided to park in the car park just to be safe!
  • Head to the River Rafting Centre to hire a canoe.
  • There are several restaurants and bars so enjoy a bite to eat or a nice refreshing drink!
  • If you are looking for a place to stay on the river then check out the ‘Bungalow Zrmanja’ they looked super cute and it would be the perfect place to stay if you like canoeing or kayaking!

Hiking to the Zrmanja Canyon

After failing to hike to the Zrmanja Canyon it was back to the drawing board and that is when we realised that we needed to head towards Jasenice and Obrovac as the viewpoint was located directly between these two villages. You can drive directly to the view point but of course we wanted to make it more challenging and hike to the top!

Access by foot

We parked our car in a town called Maslenica as we could see on AllTrails that there were tonnes of footpaths in this town that could lead up to the Zrmanja Canyon! Now I will be honest it wasn’t the most scenic route that we did during our visit to Croatia but it will still fun and the view at the end was totally worth it!

Our hike was around 17KM (10.5 miles) and it was a circular route (see screen shot below) and of course we enjoyed a refreshing beverage when we got back in one of the beach bars in Maslenica.

Access by car

Type in Pariževačka Glavica into Google Maps and it will direct you to the tiny turning off of the road called ‘54’. It is a bit of a dirt track going down there but just follow the road round and you will soon get to the car park.

The views are just so breath-taking, we spent ages just staring at the view whilst we enjoyed our baguette and beer! We couldn’t quite believe what was in front of us.

If you drive to the Parizevacka Glavica Then we would recommend visiting Berberov Buk straight afterwards as you will be able to fit in both in one day!
