Great Barrier Reef
Whether you’re wearing a wetsuit and going snorkelling or taking a trip in a glass-bottomed boat, the Great Barrier Reef is a must-see (you cannot visit Australia and not see it). It is the largest living organism on earth and visible from space, the Great Barrier Reef stretches across 2,300km and encompasses over 2,900 reef and 900 islands- wow!
Situated off the Queensland coast, you’ll have a spectacular view through the crystal-clear sea, so be sure to visit when you’re in Australia.
Ayer’s Rock
Ayer’s Rock, or Uluru, is a sacred monolith that juts out of the ground and dominates the skyline in the Australian Outback, pretty cool hey? Although unfortunately tourists are no longer allowed to climb Ayer’s Rock but it’s still a stunning location that’s well worth a visit.
You’ll find Ayer’s Rock within Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, so there are plenty of other natural sights to pack into your visit too. With guided tours and stunning natural scenes, you’ll explore natural Australia at its finest when you travel to this part of the world.
Of course, it’s location in the wilderness means you’ll need to plan before your visit. The nearest town is Alice Springs, but that’s still over 400km away from Ayer’s Rock. With an affordable car hire company, however, you can hit the road and make your way through the National Park. There are plenty of hotels and resorts en route, so it’s easy to break up your journey and make the most of what’s on offer.
Bondi Beach
Perhaps the most famous coastal stretch in the world, Bondi Beach is the perfect place to relax, surf and have fun on your travels. There’s an ocean pool, skate park and market situated next to the beach, while cafes, restaurants, and shops line this famous coastal retreat.
As many watersports companies offer equipment hire and instruction, you can even take to the water on a jet ski, try paddleboarding or sea kayaking. Bondi Beach is located just 4 miles outside of the city of Sydney, so you’ll be able to combine a trip to Bondi with a visit to plenty of other attractions.
Fraser Island
The largest sand island in the entire world, stunning Fraser Island is a recognised World Heritage site, and it’s easy to see why. Combining sandstone cliffs known as The Cathedrals, ancient rainforests, the bubbling Champagne Pools and miles of creeks and lakes, you’ll find dolphins, whales, and sharks in the waters surrounding the island and dingoes, sugar gliders, bats and wild horses inland.
With so many stunning locations to explore, it’s easy to see why Australia is such a popular tourist and backpacking location. From family-friendly holidays, adventurous off-road exploration and unforgettable road trips, you can have the time of your life in Australia.
