There is nothing better than going away at Christmas time and visiting lots of Christmas market to make you feel festive. There are so many incredible cities with Christmas Markets but this year we decided to visit Berlin.

When visiting Berlin at Christmas time you must visit as many Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) as possible. Although nowadays you can find these Weihnachtsmärkte across the whole of Europe, they are in fact an old German tradition & their history can be traced back to the 14th-16th century.

Berlin has 80 Weihnachtsmärkte spread out all over the city so we have done the hard work for you and shared our top ones to visit!

Weihnachtsmarkt Friedrichstraße

Weihnachtsmarkt Friedrichstraße opens at 2pm and closes at 11pm! We loved this market and visited on Saturday evening before heading out to dinner. This market is a food and drink market so perfect for the evening.

The food looked delicious and it was such great value as well! We spotted the rosemary potatoes at one stand and also there was a pasta stall which smelt incredible and was freshly prepared.

Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Roten Rathaus

This one is the one with the massive wheel and is also close to Alexanderplatz so don’t get them mixed up like we did! There is an ice rink at this market which was super cute!

We really liked this market it has such a nice vibe and wasn’t as busy as the Alexanderplatz market just down the road!

Weihnachtsmarkt auf dem Alexanderplatz

This market is probably the busiest market we visited and our least favourite! We thought it lacked a little bit of atmosphere, maybe because it was on a busy road and was just super super busy!

Heissa Holzmarkt

Located on the River Spree this market is close to East Side Gallery and is small and cute. It has a very rustic feel to it which we loved! When we visited on Saturday 30th November they were still setting up but we can imagine it has a great atmosphere!

Berlin Eco Christmas Market at Sophienstraße

This market is located on one of the oldest streets in Berlin! It focuses on ecological, organic and fair-trade products and foods.

We visited Sophien 11 whilst at the eco Christmas Market which was a cute hidden bar that Rach managed to spot! We stopped off for our first Gluhwein and of course had to take a couple of pictures!

Weihnachtszauber at the Gendarmenmarkt

The backdrop of the Französischer Dom and Deutscher Dom (French and German churches) to this market make it super special and a must visit.

There is a one euro admission fee to get into this market. Some of the entrances there were super busy however if you wander around you will find a number of entrances and some had no queue!

Winterwelt am Potsdamer Platz

The perfect Christmas market if you fancy a toboggan run! You can also ice skate at this Christmas market. This market is also known as ‘winter world’ and we can totally see why!

Weihnachtsmarkt an gedachtniskirche

This Christmas market is in the centre of Berlin-West and it is definitely worth a visit! This Christmas market is around Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church at Breitscheidplatz! There are over 100 beautifully decorated stands and Christmas booths!

We visited this one twice we loved it so much, we definitely recommend visiting earlier on in the day as it is much quieter! We headed back in the afternoon to have a Gluhwein as we just loved the cute snowman mugs!

Weihnachtsmarkt Schloss Charlottenburg

Charlottenburg Christmas market is located at the Charlottenburg Palace! It was so beautiful and definitely one of the biggest markets we visited! They have toilets as well, which were 1 euro to use. We noticed at a lot of the other Christmas markets there were not public toilets so just something to remember!

This market is quite far out from the centre of Berlin but if you fancy a bit of a walk and a change of scenery then definitely head to this market! We walked to this market and then electric scootered back through Großer Tiergarten which is such a lovely park!

So as you can see we spent the majority of our time visiting Christmas markets when we were visiting! We were so lucky with the weather as it didn’t rain that we could spend all day outside!

If you visit Berlin at Christmas time then be sure to visit some of the markets mentioned above!
