We have never been to Coventry before (we have driven past quite a few times but we have never stopped off). We always thought there wasn’t very much going on but after doing a bit of research we would quite like to be sent to Coventry. It appears that the city which lies just outside Birmingham, is a hub of culture and history!
Coventry is easily accessible from all parts of the UK, and with plenty of hotels, you’ll have no trouble finding somewhere to stay. While there, there is so much to do! And also so many delicious places to eat! visit the Fargo independent shopping village or eat at a Coventry restaurant.
With excellent links to Birmingham, Leicester, Stratford-upon-Avon, Leamington Spa, and the Cotswolds, Coventry is a great place to stay if you want to explore the Midlands.
Fargo Village
Lots of quirky independent shops nestle inside brightly painted, repurposed shipping containers. You’ll find vintage clothes, bubble tea, vegan food, bookshops, record shops, and lots of other creative businesses. If you like a break from mainstream retail and want to support independent business, visit Fargo village.
Coventry Cathedral
Coventry was one of the worst affected areas during the Nazi bombing of Britain in the second world war. The fourteenth century that was once a jewel in Coventry’s crown was reduced to rubble. The remains of it still stand today as a memorial. Besides the ruins stands the new cathedral, built in 1962, this amazingly designed building is worth a visit.
Transport museum
If you are into transport then you might be interested to know that there is a transport museum in Coventry.
Coventry Transport Museum houses a history of all things transport, with lots of connection to the cars that were born in the area. The museum also features land speed record breakers and lots of famous cars from history.
Lady Godiva
We have heard that you will see lots of references around the city to Lady Godiva, the twelfth-century wife of the Earl of Mercia. When the earl planned to raise taxes, Lady Godiva rode through Coventry naked on horseback. The townspeople were told not to look at her, but one man did. He became known as Peeping Tom, and that’s where the saying comes from- you learn something new everyday!
Check out the clock in the centre of the city that shows Lady Godiva riding through the town, and Tom peeping.
Stratford-upon-Avon
Not far from Coventry, you’ll find Stratford-upon-Avon, there are lots of beautiful Tudor buildings. The town attracts millions of tourists each year from all over the world.
Cadbury World
A short drive away, on the outskirts of Birmingham, lays Bournville, the world-famous home to Cadbury’s chocolate! We have visited quite a few times but it is definitely a must if you are a Cadbury lover and fancy something to do on a rainy day!
