6 Tips for feeling confident in the gym

It took us a while to feel confident in the gym, we didn’t really know what we were doing at first, who really does? Try and be consistent with your gym schedule, going to the gym once every two weeks probably isn’t going to help your confidence in the gym so try and go more frequently.

It’s so easy to feel self conscious in the gym even the fittest leanest people feel self conscious, you are your bodies own worst critique and whilst you are stood there looking in the mirror critiquing your body the person next to you is probably doing the exact same about their body and hasn’t even noticed you stood next to them.

Below are 6 top tips to help you wave goodbye to all the worry and fear you may have had about the gym, you got dis!

1). Wear something you feel comfortable in- Remember its not a fashion show and the last thing you want is to feel uncomfortable at the gym, so why not take yourself on a little active wear shopping spree, buying new gym gear can be a great motivation and can help make you feel sassy whilst at the gym. Some of our favourite shops to buy new and affordable active wear is Primark, H&M, Newlook and Missguided.

2). Ask for help or an induction- there is no problem in asking for help instead of struggling and not knowing what to do with a machine. Most men at the gym love being asked how to work a machine so don’t be afraid to ask. If you are new to the gym why not arrange an induction class or even a one off personal training session, this should help get you on track with what you want to do at the gym.

3). Work out with a friend- it can be less intimidating and you are likely to be less scared of embarrassed to try new machines and equipment in the gym if you are both trying it together. Why not have a joint personal training session as well so you can split the cost between you if you are both new to the gym and want to learn.

4). Make a plan- decide what you want to do before you go to the gym, we like to write notes on our phones so we have a rough plan on what we want to do when at the gym. You may have to be flexible with your plan though depending on what machines are available so have a couple of ideas in mind so you have something to fall back on.

5). Go off peak or at a quieter time- if you can, we know its not always possible with work commitments etc. but if you can try and go a slightly quieter times. Friday evenings in the gym are the dream!

6). Watch YouTube videos- we love watching workout videos on YouTube, they are a great way to learn new tips and techniques that you can put into practice when you are next at the gym. There are so many amazing fitness YouTubers out there! You can read all about our favourites here.

Are you lacking fitness motivation?

Are you lacking fitness motivation?

Scrolling through Instagram is sometimes enough to motivate us to get to the gym. Our Instagram feed is full of fitness fanatics who never seem to lack motivation. This isn’t true though, people only show what they want to show on Instagram so it is important to remember these people do run out of energy and can also lack motivation!

Everyone has those months were they are feeling less motivated. Most of the time motivation and consistency is never a problem for us, we look forward to going to the gym in the morning, but we do notice it takes us a little bit longer to get out of bed during those cold winter months.

We love the lifestyle we lead and we never desire another routine or lifestyle. When we have a bad day at work working out really helps us regain a positive attitude. It’s our place where we can switch off from the rest of the world and just focus on our work out. 99% of the time we will leave and have a completely different view on the problems we were facing beforehand.

Below are a few tips to help keep you dedicated and motivated to your fitness regime:

Don’t stress- It’s really important you don’t stress yourself out if you cannot fit a work out in, stress can cause de motivation. Sometimes other things get in the way that you have to prioritise and that’s just life. You aren’t going to throw away all your gains just because you missed a class. On the flip side of you do miss a class don’t let this demotivate you, get back up and go again tomorrow.

Make fitness part of your life but not your life- it’s so important you have the correct balance, that’s not to say that you should feel bad for turning down an event if you have your favourite fitness class that night. If you find yourself constantly doing this you could find yourself falling out of love with fitness. We like to work out in the morning so we can plan to see our friends and family during the evening.

Eat well- when we don’t eat a healthy balanced diet our body tells us off! We wake up feeling sluggish and lethargic with little or no energy. We know our bodies don’t agree with too much sugar and salt so it is important we personally eat this in moderation. Don’t restrict yourself though as you are likely to fall off the wagon, instead eat a balanced diet treating yourself every now and then.

Find a friend- working out with a friend can be so motivating! They are there to motivate you and maybe even get you there in the first place. If you have arranged to meet a friend in the morning you are less likely to stay in bed!

Pack your bag- we always pack our bag for the next day before going to bed! We also like to place our gym clothes by the bed so we just have to pull them on and go!

Set yourself a goal- we like to set ourselves regular goals so we have something to work towards. A few examples would be: run a certain distance, lift a certain weight, do a deadlift, do a pull up etc.

What are your top tips for keeping motivated, we would like to know!

BLOGMAS Day 13- Tips to consider before joining a gym

Why not join the gym today? Why wait until January when the gyms are so busy you won’t be able to find a machine to use. A busy gym can sometimes be stressful and de motivating, not being able to get on any of the machines will more than likely annoy you.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas the gym is usually pretty quiet and it’s the perfect opportunity to branch out and try new machines or classes you have never contemplate trying before. It is also a great time to burn off a few extra calories that you may be consuming during the festive period.

If you are thinking about joining a new gym you should do you research before joining the gym as it is likely you are going to be spending a lot of time there. We have been members of several gyms over the years and always take into consideration the below tips before joining.

We hope our top tips help you make the right decisions and go on join the gym today you won’t regret it!

Location- the location of your gym is probably one of the most important factors you should take into consideration. In the past we have been members of gyms that have been a fair few miles away from our house. We like to attend a gym that is close to our houses and also means we can attend before or after work without having to go home first. Why not join a gym that is on your way to and from work that way you have no excuse!

Opening hours- is the gym open when you are likely to use it most? Lots of gyms are now open for 24 hours but not all are so it is important you check their opening hours. You will need to decide what time of day you are likely to exercise to ensure the hours fit your schedule. If the opening times don’t fit your schedule it is likely you will be paying for something you can’t access.

Monthly Membership Fees- You will need to take into account how often you are going to attend the gym. We like to work out the amount of days we will train at the gym in a month and divide this by the membership fee that way we can see the cost per trip. It is also important to check if you have a rolling contract of if you are committing yourself to an entire year as a member.

Fitness Classes- There are several questions you should ask yourself regarding fitness classes; Does your gym have fitness classes included in your monthly membership? Are you likely to attend many of the classes? Will attending classes motivate you? What is the timetable like? You should also ask the gym staff if you need to turn up early to the class to reserve a spot.

Personal Training- Some gyms have a lot of personal trainer, if you gym is quite small you should take this into consideration as they can sometimes take up a lot of floor space. On the other hand if you want a personal trainer at the gym this might be a positive as you will have a selection to choose from.

Facilities available- we would suggest emailing the gym and asking them about their facilities do they have enough machines to go around? It is important you make sure they have a wide variety of machines in case you every want to branch out in the future. We like to go to the gym before work so it is important the changing rooms are clean and have working showers. Some of the boutique gyms also offer a towel service which is great.

Our second pick is a medium impact bra which has gorgeous black mesh detail on the back and front. The final sports bra we picked out of the collection was a high impact bra which will be perfect for running or HIIT training. We love the colour plum so we were immediately attracted to this bra we also liked the striped elasticised band.

We know Nike is a little on the pricey side but it is Christmas so you should treat yourself after all! We have chosen this Nike Shield running jacket in the colour red. What are your fitness must haves? We would love to hear about them!

BLOGMAS Day 5- London Ice Skating Guide

Ice skating has definitely become a Christmas tradition for us in the recent years. There are so many ice rinks to choose from in London we thought we would share some of the ice rinks we have tried and tested!

Most of the ice rinks have 1 hour slots, but make sure you book your spot online quickly as they sell out pretty fast. We love ice skating in the evening when it is dark outside as most of the ice rinks usually have pretty lights that make the rinks much more picturesque.

Don’t forget to wrap up warm and we would suggest wearing some extra thick socks (ski socks) so your toes don’t get cold!

After you have ice skated we would recommend warming up with a nice mulled wine of hot chocolate.

Somerset House- This is the first ice rinks we ever went to at Christmas time in London so of course it is top of our list. The location is stunning and the ice rink is built in the middle of the 18th century courtyard.  There is something about this ice rink that is very magical and always makes you feel super festive. After you have ice skated remember to take a photo in front of the amazing Christmas tree they have every year.

Natural History Museum- This Ice Rink is truly stunning! The trees around the ice rink are draped in fairy lights making it the most enchanting ice rink in London.  There is a large ice rink and also a smaller ice rink suitable for children. Watch out though as this ice rink can occasionally close for private functions.

Hampton Court Palace- Henry VIII’s sixteenth century house makes a pleasant setting for this outdoor ice risk. We would recommend visiting the ice risk in the evening when it really comes alive.

Winter wonder land – The entry to winter wonderland is free but if you want to go ice skating you will need to purchase a ticket online. When we visited winter wonderland previously we thought the ice rink was quite over crowded, even though it is the biggest outdoor rink in the London.

Walking Workout

Walking its free and one of the easiest ways to get fit and become more active yet so many people HATE walking. As a society it has become too easy to get from A to B without using your legs. There are so many different types of transport these days it has resulted in us not having to walk.

Growing up our parents were all keen walkers, at the weekend we used to go on family walks which at the time we hated! We didn’t understand why our parents enjoyed walking and we certainly didn’t agree when they said ‘come on it will be fun’.

Now we go on walks all the time exploring new places whether this is in the beautiful countryside or exploring the streets of a bustling city. If we have the option of walking or using transport we will always choose walking.

A walking workout will help strengthen your heart and lungs whilst also toning your legs and bum (Bonus).  Walking is a great way to help maintain a healthy weight and strengthen your bones and muscles both of which are incredibly important.

Last year we each purchased a Fitbit so we could keep track of how many steps we were taking in a day, working in an office can reduce your daily step count dramatically so we wanted to make sure we met our daily target of 10,000 a day every day. The Apple Iphone also comes with a ‘Health’ app that will tell you how many steps you walked in a day.

Ways to make your walk more enjoyable

  1. arrange to meet your friend for a walk, this way you are less likely to cancel as you have made a commitment.
  2. Explore new places
  3. If you are walking on your own try listening to some music or a Podcast.
  4. Phone a friend and have a catch up (time will fly by)
  5. Pack some healthy snacks and water if you are going on a long walk.

Get outside and enjoy this beautiful world we live in.
