Plate Restaurant Review

Plate restaurant is located in the M by Montcalm hotel which is located just a 5 minute walk from Old Street in London. The hotel opened in 2015 and the restaurant opened last May and is absolutely gorgeous.


Plate is located on 2 floors, the ground floor is a bakery during the day and cocktail bar at night. It has comfy seats located by the windows, perfect for watching the world go by. The smell of coffee and fresh pastries hits you as you walk into the restaurant which is divine. The bakery also supplies Black Coffee (a well known coffee chain in London) with their pastries!


The main restaurant is on the mezzanine above the bakery/bar. The restaurant is spacious with floor to ceiling windows and amazing plants making it an Instagram dream. There are also lots of plants which add to the green house botanical vibe! Look at us cuties posing in front of this cute blossom tree!


The staff here are so lovely and we had the nicest waitress who was very attentive and proud to work at Plate. She always made sure we were happy with the food we had ordered which was really nice of her.

The food and beverage manager Frederick also come over to introduce himself. He gave us a bit of background on the company and their vision for the future. He also told us about their ribs night… more on that later!

The brunch menu is large and there is so much choice. In order to have bottomless prosecco for £15 you have to order 2 courses off the brunch menu, no trouble for us!!!

We decided to start with something sweet and a little lighter, these dishes were much more breakfast like. Rachel went for the ‘Pears & Cream’ which was Grilled poached pear, ricotta cheese, granola, grapes and honey this was absolutely delicious! There were so many delicious flavours we would definitely recommend!

Annie went for the berries and yoghurt which was a mixed berry compote, Greek yogurt, granola and honey! This was so delicious and the berry compote was the perfect blend of sweet and sour! We have to mention the bowls they used as well as we absolutely loved them, they reminded us of shells!

For the next course annie opted for the sourdough with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Quite often when we go for brunch they are not very generous with the salmon but here at Plate they are very generous which is fab! The plate was piled high with both scrambled egg and amazing quality smoked salmon, can I eat it all over again please!?

Rach went for the macaroni cheese which was simple but incredibly tasty and very filling! I loved the basil they had added to the mix it added tons of flavour! Would definitely recommend this dish and the portion size was huge, so big in fact it almost defeated me!

For dessert we decided to share the French toast (we were already SO FULL). This was amazing it was light fluffy and tasted kind of like brioche with a croissant texture it was the perfect way to end a delicious meal! It was served with Banana caramel, maple creme Fraiche and candied pecans.

Unlike most bottomless brunches the waitress left the bottle of prosecco by our side in an ice bucket. We loved this as it meant we could top our glasses up when we wanted to, although she was so attentive we often didn’t need to. We were offered another bottle as well which was nice but we literally couldn’t fit anything else in, we were stuffed!

No issues on the toilet front they were clean tidy! They also had elemis hand wash and hand cream which we love the smell of!

As we mentioned before Plate also offer a bottomless steak and chips on a Friday from 6-7pm for £15 and a bottomless ribs and wings on a Thursday for just £10 which runs from 6-7:30pm so you have an hour and a half to eat as much as you want.

It would be a great place to work from, which Rach took note of as she works from home! The WIFI was good as well which is a bonus and means you wouldn’t have to hotspot!

The hotel looked so beautiful we would love to stay here, maybe one day hey?

The Sipping Room In Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf at the weekend is so fantastic because its like a different world. During the week its full of all those business men and women who all probably work in finance and is so busy and non-stop. However at the weekend all these people are probs chilling on their yacht on the Thames in Marlow or enjoying a country break in the Cotswolds…… this means its nice and quiet at the weekend and the perfect place to go for food.

We think Canary Wharf looks a bit futureistic, even the train station is pretty cool and then as you come out the station all those sky rise office buildings with floor to ceiling glass. There are lots of eateries here and also lots of shops too!

The Sipping Room was our brunch spot of choice, it is located in West India Quay which is just a 5 minute walk from Canary Wharf station. The Sipping Room is a Drake and Morgan restaurant and from what we can tell it seems they offer a standard brunch menu across all their restaurants/bars.

It was mid-October on a beautiful autumn day, the sun had definitely decided to put its hat on that day!! We asked to sit outside to make the most of the glorious weather and that was no trouble at all!

There is lots to choose from on the brunch menu (which is available at the weekend from 11am – 4pm) and its very varied so everyone will be happy! There is the all day breakfast menu which includes items such as pancakes, avocado on sourdough, full works, veggie works and eggs Benedict.

There are also plates to start or share which include burrata and a meze board. For brunch you could also choose a burger or a dish from the grill. See what we mean, lots to choose from! There is also a breakfast menu (which includes boiled eggs and soldiers!) and an all day menu which includes pies!

Anyway back to what we actually ate! As it was brunch time and we hadn’t had breakfast as we had been at a gym class we opted for the brunch menu and also just because we love brunch!

Rach went for the buttermilk chicken and waffle as she has never had it before and was intrigued to see how the elements all worked together. This was served with a waffle, topped with avocado and then a buttermilk chicken breast with chilli maple syrup. The combination worked so well together, and the size of the chicken was very very generous! As I love avocado I wish there was more avocado on it!

Annie went for the avocado on sourdough but changed the poached egg for scrambled egg. The staff were more than happy to make this change which was nice! It was really tasty and the portion size was great, sourdough bread would have been better than just a slice of white but you can’t have it all!

We then enjoyed our brunch with a juice each, Rach went for sweet greens (kiwi, pineapple, cucumber, orange) which was really refreshing, we would definitely recommend!

Annie went for for L’Orange (orange, mango, avocado), I had never tried avocado in a smoothie before so I was really intrigued! It made the smoothie really creamy and the orange and mango overpowered the flavour of the avocado. Both were refreshing and delicious and made us feel all summery in the lovely sunshine.

We popped inside as this is where the toilets were located. We loved the decor of the inside there were faux fur blankets over most of the chairs and it looked like a little winter wonderland!

The bar was located at the front of the restaurant, just as you walked in the door. The staff were all incredibly friends at The Sipping Room and answered any questions we had

The toilets were very clean and there were plenty of cubicles, we love the fact Drake & Morgan have sweets in the rest rooms! This time they had a huge pot of quality streets, they really are getting into the festive spirit!

We would definitely recommend visiting! The Christmas menu looked delicious and we already have our eyes on it!

The Somerville Hotel Breakfast Review

It’s no secret that we absolutely love breakfast, it’s our favourite meal of the day and although there are many arguments about whether or not it actually makes you a healthier human for eating it we know it makes us feel fantastic.

Breakfast sets us up for the day so when we found out breakfast was included in our hotel stay at The Somerville in Jersey we were ecstatic. Breakfast on an average day is great but breakfast at a hotel is even better.

The view from The Somerville restaurant is truly breath taking, it overlooks St Aubins bag and on a clear day you can see for miles.

The Somerville breakfast spread certainly didn’t disappoint, it was a self-service buffet and there was a lot of choice. Upon arrival at the restaurant we were shown to a table and the waitress took our tea and coffee orders and asked us if we would like some toast which of course we did.

We asked the waitress if they had any dairy free milk for our coffee and she said yes, we were pleasantly surprised! We love the fact more and more hotels are offering soya milk (it’s so delicious in coffee).

The continental breakfast on offer at The Somerville was pretty impressive and it resulted in us going up time and time again. We don’t like mixing our food you know how some people will go up to the breakfast buffet and pile their plate with some eggs, croissants, fruit, cheese you name it they have it piled high on one plate, we honestly couldn’t think of anything worse instead we just opt for a number of different courses.

There were a selection of fruit juices including; orange, apple, grapefruit & tomato juice which were all incredibly fresh.

There was a large selection of spreads and jams you could have with your toast including Marmite and Nutella (two of our favourites) the Jams came in those cute little jars something that we love when visiting a hotel and there were so many flavours including; marmalade, strawberry, blackcurrant and clear honey.

There was a selection of fresh pastries including croissants, pan au raison, cinnamon swirls and pan au chocolate which looked really delicious but we didn’t actually opt for pastries this time (shock horror).

In the fridge section there was a selection of Muller yoghurts, plain Greek yoghurt and pre made yoghurt berry pots which were delicious. Next to the yoghurt was an assortment of fruit; berries, grapefruit, Pineapple, watermelon which we put on top of our yoghurt.

The smoked salmon was also in the fridge and we nearly missed it the first time, but spotted it last minute and tucked in right away. Smoked salmon is an all time favourite so we always make sure we opt for that especially when in Jersey, the fish is always so fresh and tastes incredible. There were several cold meats and cheeses as well.

The cereal selection included; rice krispies, corn flakes, wearabix, museli, bran flakes and all bran so if you are hoping for coco pops then sadly you will be dissapointed. You can order porridge as well from one of the waitresses or waiters.

The cooked breakfast had everything you would expect including: bacon, sausage, black pudding, hash browns, cooked tomatoes, mushrooms, scrambled eggs, fried eggs and poached eggs could be ordered.

Overall we would definitely rate the breakfast, it was delicious and set us up for the day ahead!

Christmas Day Breakfast 

We actually cannot believe that Christmas has come around so quickly, how are we already thinking about what we are going to eat for breakfast on Christmas morning, its mad. We did however think it would be the perfect opportunity to share with you a little recipe that will help start your Christmas morning, nothing fancy just keeping v simple, v quick and most importantly vv tasty.

Christmas breakfast has always been quite a big deal in our households, we always start our Christmas with a super yummy breakfast and a glass or two of champagne. Christmas Day always revolves around food and every meal has got that extra bit of magic added to it usually in the form of champagne in our houses. We have therefore decided to jazz up our breakfast up this year to make it that little bit more special and went for waffles topped with cream cheese and smoked salmon YASSS! If you wanted to you could even shape the waffles into snowflakes or Christmas trees!

recipe below makes 5 waffle so double or tripple the recipe if you have more mouths to feed.

Ingredients
125g Plain Flour
½ tsp Caster Sugar
½ tsp Baking Powder
¾ tsp Mustard Powder
¼ tsp Smoked Paprika
½ tsp ground pepper
210ml Milk
65g Unsalted butter
2 Medium eggs

Method
Place the flour, sugar, baking powder, mustard powder, paprika, salt and pepper in a large mixing bowl.
Mix until all ingredients are combined
In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, butter and eggs.
Make a well in the dry mix, and pour the wet mix into it gradually, whisking until fully combined
Leave the batter on the side for 5 minutes
Switch the Waffle Maker on and lightly oil, close the lid and allow the waffle machine to heat up
Once the waffle maker is hot enough pour the mixture into the centre of each waffle
Close the lid and leave to cook for 4 minutes, without opening the lid
Open the lid of the machine carefully and remove the waffle
Repeat with the remaining batter and keep the rest of them warm in the oven on a wire rack to ensure they do not become soggy

Gingerbread Man Recipe

It is really Christmas if you haven’t tucked into some delicious homemade gingerbread men? We think not! Ever since we were little it has been a tradition to make them and every year they taste just as good.

We use the same recipe year in year out as it has never let us down, they are rich and spicy and just so dam tasty. Everyone we know has tried them and they always ask for the recipe, so we thought we would publish it on our blog.

We are going away for the weekend to Bath with some of our school friends so these will definitely be coming along for the ride (if they make it that far).

Recipe
275g Flour (plain or you can use spelt flour)
1tsp Baking Powder
1tsp Cinnamon
2tsp Ginger
100g Coconut Sugar
75g Unsalted Butter
1 large egg
50g Maple Syrup
50ml Milk

Method

  1. Line a baking tray with grease proof paper
  2. Sift the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and Ginger into a large mixing bowl
    Add the Coconut Sugar and stir until combined
  3. Chop the butter into small segments and add to the dry ingredients. Use your fingers to rub the ingredients together, continue to do so until the ingredients look like bread crumbs
  4. In a measuring just whisk an egg and add the maple syrup and milk
  5. Make a well in the dry ingredients and poor the egg mixture in
    Stir until all the ingredients come together and form a dough
  6. Wrap the ingredients in cling film and leave in the fridge to cool for 30 minutes
    While the dough is in the oven preheat the oven to 160oc
  7. Flour a kitchen worktop and roll out the Dough to about a 1/4 inch thick. cut out gingerbread men (we did trees as well this time) with a cutter
  8. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Allow to fully cool before eating and decorating if you wish to do so

Pumpkin Protein Pancakes

We were recently browsing the isles of  homesense (which is something we do on a regular basis) and came across the Halloween isle, of course we had to stop and take a look. As we were looking we came across a pumpkin cookie cutter and imediatly thought we could make some pumpkin pancakes using it. The cutter was super cheap it only cost us £1.99.

So that is exactly what we did one Saturday morning after the gym, we came home mixed up a batter and got flipping. The cutter was fairly big so we had to make sure we made the pancakes fairly big, we didnt cut them into shape until they were cooked.

We decided to make protien pancakes this time and added some Wheybox toffee protein to add some flavour. You can make them with any flavour protein we have used vanilla & white chocolate in the past and they both taste fab.

For toppings we decided to go for stewed cinnamon apples and some cinnamon cream cheese which tasted bloomin fantastic.

You can find the ingredients we used for the pancakes below (we made 3 extra large pancakes. its really simple add all the ingredients into a mixing bowl and whisk until combined. Melt some butter or coconut oil in a hot pan, add a ladle of mixture and allow the pancake to cook on one side before flipping (you should see bubbles appear). Enjoy with whatever toppings you choose!

50g Oats Blended
1 Egg
1tsp Baking Powder
1 Scoop Protein Powder
100ml Almond Milk

Toppings
Stewed Apples with Cinnamon
Cream Cheese with Cinnamon

Coffee & Maple Walnut Banana Loaf

As you have probably already guess by now we absolutely LOVE banana loaf. We make it ALL the time whenever we have some left over bananas that need to be used up. Our recipe is so simple and takes no time at all! In fact we made the one below before work one morning that’s how quick and easy it is.

We would suggest enjoying a slice when it is warm and freshly baked because it just tastes unreal!

When littles emailed us to ask if we we would like to take part in national bake week using their coffee we jumped at the chance! Our flavour of choice was the maple walnut coffee and we instantly new it would taste amazing in our refined sugar free banana loaf (original recipe available here).

Ingredients
1 1/5 Ripe Bananas (you will use the other half for the topping)
200G Oat Flour (we just blend oats that we already have in the cupboard)
8g Chopped Walnuts
1 tsp Baking Powder
100ml Milk of your choice we went for Almond
3tsp Little’s Maple Walnut Coffee mixed with 20ml water
1tbsp Coconut Sugar

Topping Ingredients
5g Oats
1/2 Banana
1tbsp Coconut Sugar
5 Finely Chopped Walnuts

Method
Pre heat your oven to 180oc
Line your loaf tin and grease with melted coconut oil or butter
Add 20ml boiling water to the coffee granules in a mug or measuring jug
Blend the oats until they are fine and resemble flour
Chop one of the bananas in half length ways and set one half aside
Mash the 1 1/5 remaining bananas in a mixing bowl
Add the oat flour, baking powder & walnuts
Once combined pour in the milk and stir well
Add the coffee mixture and continue to stir until combined
Pour the mixture into the loaf tin
Cut the remaining half of the banana length ways and place on top of the mixture
Sprinkle the handful oats, chopped walnuts and coconut sugar on top
Bake the banana loaf for 30 minutes until cooked through
When cooked let cool and enjoy with a Little’s coffee

Caravan Brunch Review

Caravan is situated just a short walk away from the station in the kings cross Partnership Development. We walked from Baker Street as it was only a 30 minute walk but had to walk through kings cross station to get to Caravan.

We visited Caravan one Sunday on a beautiful sunny day, we arrived at 11AM and headed inside to ask for a table, we opted to sit outside because of the lovely weather and were told it was a 30 minute wait which was fine by us we were not in a rush anyway.

We headed to the bar to order a drink while we waited to be seated. We had only been waiting for 10 minutes when the waitress came over and told us our table was ready- amazing.

The bar area was pretty cool it wasn’t in the middle of the restaurant but it also wasn’t situated at the back so you could walk the entire way around the bar and order from both sides which was quite cool.

The toilets were communal at Caravan, there were separate cubicles for males and females but the rest was communal. We have started to see this more and more in London so maybe it will become the norm soon.

The inside is rather dining room like (this definitely isn’t a bad thing we love it), there are long communal tables which immediately reminded us of being back at school. The high ceilings and pipes that are on display gives Caravan an industrial look which gives it a slightly edgy vibe.

The atmosphere inside was energetic and lively it looked like everyone was having the best time whilst potentially recovering from the night before with great food in a vibrant establishment. If we were not able to get a seat outside then we would have been more than happy to sit inside on the long communal tables.

It was so lovely being able to sit outside in September (especially as it had been so cold the week before), but we soon noticed that it wasn’t so great for taking photos (dam shadows), we actually ended up putting our food on the floor in the shade to get a decent photo of our food oh the things we do for a good Instagram shot.

Annie ordered the Banana, Date, Tamarind, Cocoa Nib, Almond Milk smoothie it was very sweet and almost tasted quite artificial. Rach went for the Cucumber, Apple, Parsley, Spinach which was quite watery and sadly was no where near as good as her homemade green juices.

If we are completely honest we didn’t love the juices we both didn’t enjoy them as much as we had hoped and didn’t end up finishing them either. They cost £4.50 so below average for a juice or smoothie in London but if we were to return to Caravan we would definitely opt for an iced coffee instead.

For food Annie ordered the Chapel and swan smoked salmon, soft scrambled egg on grain toast which was absolutely incredible. They were very generous with the portions and it kept me full for the rest of the day which is always a bonus. This dish cost £9 which is actually very good value for London considering it had smoked salmon on it.

Rach ordered the Avacado, Chilli, Lemon & olive oil on sourdough bread but she also added a side of bacon which was undeniably delicious and they were very generous and gave three thick slices of bacon. The dish cost £7 and the bacon was an additional £4 so again it was only £11.

Over all we were really impressed with Caravan and we loved the relaxed and quirky vibes. We would definitely recommend a visit, there is so much more on the menu that we need to try so we are sure we will be back again soon.

Plum Crumble Baked Porridge

Autumn is definitely on its way and the colder mornings have left us wanting a warm bowl of porridge. We are definitely missing the summer but we are enjoying not getting the porridge sweats in the morning, if you know you know!

At the weekends we always enjoy tucking into a scrumptious bowl of baked porridge experimenting with lots of different ingredients. This time we decided to go for a plum crumble baked porridge which was absolutely delicious and probably one of our favourite ones yet!

Let us know if you decide to make this bowl of goodness because trust us it will leave you wanting to go back for more, who doesn’t love eating something that tastes like dessert for breakfast?

Ingredients
40g porridge oats
1 or 2 plums depending on the size
50ml Almond milk (or any milk of your choice)
1tsp peanut butter

Method
Pre heat the oven to 180oc
Destone the plum and chop into small slices
In a small mixing bowl add in all the ingredients and stir until well combined
Pour the mixture into a ramakin dish
Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes making sure the top is golden brown
Enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea

Hally’s Brunch Review

We were so excited to try out Hally’s as we had been following their Instagram for a while so when we got the opportunity to go we couldn’t turn it down.

We booked a table for midday on Saturday and arrived on a beautiful sunny day. There were people sat outside with a glass of Prosecco in hand enjoying the beautiful weather. We were taken to our table inside the decor was lovely, simple but stylish.

We decided to go for the bottomless brunch which is available at weekends. It seemed like a great offer, you get a choice of pastry or cookie, any main dish, tea/coffee and bottomless Prosecco or mimosa.

We enjoyed a chocolate croissant and an almond croissant and both opted for an iced coffee. The menu stated there was a supplement for iced drinks, however we were not actually charged the extra, which was a bonus!

There was so much choice for the mains and it was really hard to decide, however in the end Rach opted for the Smashed avocado on sourdough toast with ricotta, feta, mint & lemon with a side of chilli jam which was very yummy, although did have a kick to it!

After spying what someone else had ordered Annie went for the Corn fritters with crispy bacon, avocado, poached egg & creme fraiche. They were incredibly generous with the crispy bacon and served the fritters with 2 poached eggs. Its safe to say Annie was definitely stuffed by the end of it.

We also enjoyed bottomless glasses of Prosecco and mimosas. It was weird because you couldn’t mix and match, once you picked Prosecco you always had to have Prosecco. Therefore we decided to order one of each so we could mix and match. Sometimes you fancy a little orange with your Prosecco and sometimes you don’t so we were very happy – but did find this a teeny strange!

The location of Hally’s is amazing, we had never been to Parson’s Green before and loved it. It was such a quaint little street on the edge of Chelsea with gorgeous looking buildings and shops. Opposite Hally’s is Little H which is the same chain but more of a takeaway with a couple of high stools to sit at.

We had missed going for brunch in London and Hally’s was the perfect place to visit.
